Students love anything new that is technology based. I know that my students always beg me to make assignments on the computer rather than paper work or notebook based assignments. Most students are not more comfortable in front of the screen rather than in front of a piece of paper. I think its fantastic that you are monitoring progress and adjusting lessons and activities for your students. Its not always the students who have to figure things out. Do you have access to a lot of technology at your school? We have one computer lab and one mobile computer lab. I have a computer and a projector in my classroom and use it frequently but most of my technology uses has to be to encourage them to use it in projects from home. We have recently purchased 3 classroom smart boards and 4 mobile smart boards at our school and I hope to be able to incorporate this into my classroom. So many teachers in my district think there needs to be a major project to use technology, and then they focus on the technology piece more that the content or skills being taught. Students need to learn to use technology to accomplish everyday tasks, so that their use of technology is integrated into their daily lives, rather than being seen as a separate component.
GingerAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17628056537502293055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5013095881793310937.post-69059568331469220342009-12-18T14:43:36.580-08:002009-12-18T14:43:36.580-08:00I like that you want to extend this blog idea to o...I like that you want to extend this blog idea to other teachers and students in your district. I am unfamiliar with the screencasting software you mentioned, Jing! and would be interested in knowing more about it. I use a blog with my high school classes and am beginning to implement one in the middle school classes as well. Students like being able to critique one another and ask questions in this manner. It is less threatening to them than asking openly in class. They also can think through what they want to say better than when trying to answer quickly in the classroom. I believe the same is true for us as teachers. Your blog with staff affords you that opportunity. One step is to introduce the students to the idea of what we will be using and show them examples. Then I have them brainstorm about ways they can use that technology within our class. Then we start learning how to use the technology. Then we start using it to create projects within the classroom. Sometimes this involves deciding what information we will need before we learn how to use the technology. It seems that you have a great handle on the way to use voicethreads and technology in your class.

CarlaCarla Liminghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07969476161620568941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5013095881793310937.post-40398328830318928242009-11-22T21:21:00.400-08:002009-11-22T21:21:00.400-08:00Hi Stephen,

What kind of access are you going to have to computers at your school? Are you going to access a general computer lab? Or, do you have a computer lab that is almost entirely at your disposal? I ask these questions because I know it is very difficult to have access to a computer lab on campus that I do not control. And, using equipment such as microphones and the addes software, do you already have these things?

I wish you luck with your future projects. I am interested to hear how things work out. I like the way you say that you are giving your student's choices. This truly leads to simply differentiation that the students are able to choose. Each student learns in a different way and the technology reaches their educational needs and styles. I would also lkike to know hw you are going to access their learning. I also believe there are multiple ways students can demonstrate proficiency in the standards and skills they are learning. I was wondering though about evaluating their learning. Will you use rubrics to evaluate their use of Voice Thread and blogs? How will you measure proficiency? I currently use a rubric with my student blog and we spend quite a bit of time reading sample blog entries and evaluating them so they understand the process. But I always like to see how others assess this type of learning as well.
GingerAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17628056537502293055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5013095881793310937.post-19669450872524474442009-11-15T17:10:03.159-08:002009-11-15T17:10:03.159-08:00Hi Stephen,

One issue I had was that it is an open website, meaning anyone can join and comment on other projects. Therefore, not everything is appropriate for students. I had one parent who refused to allow her child to use the program and I had to allow him to create Power Point projects instead.
It is nice that students have access outside of the classroom and can experience the comments of others. I believe one of the key components of gathering information from the web is determining the accuracy of the information. Like Thomas Edison’s quote “We now know a thousand ways not to build a light bulb.” Trial and error is one of the best methods of learning and most importantly retaining it.
When you spoke of hesitance of manipulating the web due to internet predators and misuse of social networking tools this also correlates with the learning of right from wrong. Students are bound to come across misusers. If we can teach them at an early age of the consequences and warning signs maybe they will be more likely to avoid the scary situations that arise today.

Great post and best of luck utilizing these new tools,

Stephanie Coultripscoultriphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13665239175811712938noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5013095881793310937.post-22361058866618210142009-07-28T12:06:43.188-07:002009-07-28T12:06:43.188-07:00Stephen,

I had this same debate in a tech class I taught to some of my district teachers. Most of us felt computers= ok, cell phones=MAYBE, depending. As long as you teach appropriate computer usage, fine...although of course teacher need to monitor that usage.
With cell phones... we felt it depends on several things: grade level (in elementary school in my district they aren't even allowed to have phones in school..although that doesn't stop them! [side note: WHY oh why does a 8 year old need a cell phone???]) and your class. Some of the high school teachers said that they liked that VoiceThread allowed cell phone comments; they thought their students might be more apt to use that option than a text or computer audio comment. Other middle/high school teachers said many of their classes-NO WAY! Their students were not mature enough and would abuse the technology by texting in class, or doing inappropriate things.
I have to say, I'm in the camp of no, not at this time because I think there are other technologies that are more useful and worthwhile.

~Erica StianchiMrs. Stianchihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00904847539355263375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5013095881793310937.post-73746987001648012632009-07-28T11:56:39.897-07:002009-07-28T11:56:39.897-07:00Stephen,

I think the first step is to try it ourselves and evaluate whether the tools are appropriate for whatever grade level/subject we are teaching. If yes, go right ahead and use it, teaching the students the right way to interact with it. If not, then at least you yourself learned a new tool! For example, I consider myself fairly open to new technological ideas...but I still don't see why I would use Twitter in elementary school (or honestly why it exists at all!) :)
~Erica StianchiMrs. Stianchihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00904847539355263375noreply@blogger.com
